Gracious God,

You created me for relationship. You call me into a life shaped not only through private prayer and personal conviction, but through the presence of other people. In community, faith is given hands and feet. Love becomes more than an intention; it becomes something practiced.

Thank you for those who have encouraged me when my strength was failing, spoken truth when I could not see clearly, and remained near when withdrawing would have been easier. Thank you for shared laughter, honest conversation, ordinary kindness, and prayers offered when I could not find words of my own.

I confess that I often want community on my own terms. I welcome relationships that affirm me, accommodate my preferences, and require little sacrifice. When misunderstanding arises or another person disappoints me, I may retreat, become guarded, or decide that distance is easier than the patient work of love.

Teach me to remain present without pretending that every relationship is simple.

Give me humility to listen without preparing my defense. Help me receive correction without resentment and offer it without superiority. When forgiveness is needed, keep me from nurturing a private account of wrongs. When I have caused harm, give me courage to acknowledge it plainly and seek repair.

Show me how to make room for people whose experiences, personalities, questions, and needs differ from my own. Free me from treating familiarity as the measure of belonging. Let me notice those who stand at the edges, whose voices are easily missed, or who wonder whether there is a place for them among us.

Keep community from becoming conformity. Teach us to honor conscience, welcome honest questions, and protect the dignity of each person. Where a community becomes controlling, unsafe, or unwilling to confront harm, grant wisdom, truth, and courage. Faithful belonging should never require silence in the face of abuse or injustice.

Help me accept that shared life will inconvenience me. Love may interrupt my plans, require patience, or ask me to carry a burden I did not choose. Give me a willing heart—not one that serves from compulsion, but one made generous by the grace I have received.

When I am tempted to isolate, remind me that self-protection can become a prison. When I feel unseen within a crowd, lead me toward relationships where honesty can take root. When others need my presence, make me attentive enough to recognize the invitation.

Today, show me one way to participate in the life of another person. Help me listen without hurrying, encourage without flattering, serve without seeking notice, or pray with someone who needs companionship.

Shape me through the beauty and difficulty of belonging. May our shared life become a place where grace is practiced, burdens are carried, truth is spoken with love, and no one must walk alone.

In the name of Jesus, who gathered people around a table and called them into a new family.

Amen.
