A Prayer for Discernment
A prayer for bringing decisions and uncertainty before God, testing our desires honestly, listening patiently, and receiving courage for the next faithful step.
Gracious God,
You see the whole road while I see only what is immediately before me. I come carrying a decision, a question, or an uncertainty that I cannot resolve by effort alone.
My instinct is to hurry.
I want the answer now. I want certainty without waiting, direction without risk, and assurance that no choice will involve difficulty or loss. When clarity does not come quickly, fear grows loud and urgency begins to sound like wisdom.
Quiet me, Lord.
Help me listen before I move. Bring my desires into the open—not only what I say I want, but what I secretly hope to gain, preserve, avoid, or prove. Show me where fear is narrowing my vision and where pride has made me unwilling to reconsider.
Give me wisdom to test what I perceive. Let Scripture shape my judgment. Send people who will offer honest counsel rather than merely confirm what I already prefer. Help me attend to circumstances without treating every open door as your command or every obstacle as your refusal.
Teach me to recognize the voice of Christ by its character. Does this path lead toward truth? Does it enlarge my capacity to love God and neighbor? Does it make room for humility, faithfulness, and mercy? Keep me from calling something your will simply because it serves my comfort or ambition.
And teach me to understand peace rightly. Your peace is not always the absence of discomfort. Sometimes obedience is costly, truth is unsettling, and the faithful road is difficult. Give me the deeper steadiness that can remain even when the choice before me is demanding.
Where I must wait, make waiting fruitful. Where more information is needed, make me patient enough to seek it. Where the next step is already clear, keep discernment from becoming a respectable name for delay.
Release me from the demand for perfect certainty. I may misunderstand. I may need to change direction. Remind me that your guidance is not defeated by my human limitations and that your mercy accompanies me even when I choose imperfectly.
Today, I place this decision before you with open hands. Guard me from fear disguised as caution and impulse disguised as faith. Give me enough light for the next honest step—and the courage to take it when the time comes.
In the name of Jesus, who sought your will and walked it faithfully.
