A Prayer for Discipling Others

A prayer for accompanying another person’s spiritual growth with humility, patience, integrity, attentive listening, and faithful encouragement.

Two people walk side by side along a wooded path toward warm morning light.
Discipling is not standing above another person with every answer, but walking beside them as both lives are formed by grace.

Gracious God,

You have formed my faith through the presence, wisdom, patience, and example of others. Someone listened to my questions, encouraged me when I faltered, and helped me recognize your grace at work. Thank you for those who walked beside me without demanding that I grow according to their timetable.

Now make me attentive to the person you may be inviting me to encourage.

Keep me from imagining that discipling requires me to possess every answer. I am still learning, still being corrected, and still dependent upon your mercy. Let that awareness make me humble rather than hesitant. I do not need to be complete before I can offer another person companionship.

Teach me to listen before I instruct. Help me understand the questions another person is actually asking rather than giving the answers I assume they need. Give me patience with uncertainty, repetition, setbacks, and slow growth. Remind me that spiritual formation cannot be forced, hurried, or manufactured.

May my life speak truthfully alongside my words. Where my actions contradict what I teach, bring me into greater integrity. Give me the honesty to acknowledge my failures and the humility to say, “I do not know.” Let the person walking with me see not an image of perfection, but a life continually returning to grace.

Protect me from making another person dependent upon me. I am not called to gather followers for myself, control someone’s conscience, or reproduce my preferences in another life. Help me point beyond myself toward Christ. Honor the agency, gifts, questions, and particular calling of the person before me.

Make this relationship mutual. Even as I encourage another, keep me receptive to what you may teach me through them. Let their insight challenge my assumptions, their questions deepen my understanding, and their faithfulness renew my own.

Give me wisdom about boundaries. Help me know what I can faithfully offer and when another person needs pastoral, professional, or specialized care beyond my ability. Keep our relationship safe, truthful, and free from manipulation or concealed expectations.

Show me how to encourage without flattering, correct without shaming, and share wisdom without controlling the outcome. When growth is visible, let me celebrate without taking credit. When progress is difficult to see, keep me faithful without becoming discouraged.

Today, place one person upon my heart. Show me whether they need a conversation, a listening ear, a word of encouragement, a shared prayer, or simply the assurance that they do not walk alone. Give me courage to offer my presence without pressure.

May whatever truth you have entrusted to me become generous rather than private. Through ordinary companionship, form both of us more deeply in faith, wisdom, love, and trust.

In the name of Jesus, who called disciples not merely to receive his life, but to share it with others.

Amen.
