A Prayer for Gratitude

God of every good gift,

I come before you with hands that are often clenched—holding tightly to what I have, reaching anxiously for what I lack, and striving to secure what can only be received. Open my hands today. Teach me to recognize that my life is sustained by gifts I did not create and mercies I could never earn.

Forgive me for the blessings I have mistaken for guarantees. The food that nourishes me, the shelter that protects me, the people who accompany me, the beauty that restores me, and the rest that renews me—all bear witness to your generous care. Even the breath within me is a gift.

Make me attentive to the quieter forms of your provision: a timely word of encouragement, strength sufficient for a difficult hour, patience I did not know I possessed, an interruption that became a blessing, or grace that met me after I had failed. Keep me from overlooking your care simply because it arrived differently than I expected.

When anxiety tells me there will never be enough, remind me of the ways you have already sustained me. When entitlement makes me dissatisfied, restore my wonder. When comparison draws my attention toward another person’s blessings, return my gaze to the gifts you have placed before me.

Let gratitude form humility within me. Free me from living as though everything depends upon my effort. Teach me to receive without grasping, enjoy without possessing, and share without fear. May thankfulness loosen my hold on what I have so that your generosity might flow through me toward others.

Today, I will name the gifts I have received. I will remember the people through whom your care has reached me. I will give thanks for beauty, provision, rest, and grace—not in vague or hurried words, but specifically and sincerely.

Shape my heart through this practice until gratitude becomes more than a momentary response. Let it become the posture from which I live: trusting your provision, resting in your care, and receiving each day with open hands.
