A Prayer for Holy Communion

Christ’s table is not a reward for those who have earned their place. It is an invitation to receive what grace alone can give. A Prayer for Holy Communion

Lord Jesus Christ,

You invite me again to your table—not because I have earned a place, but because your mercy has made room for me. Quiet the noise within me. Slow my hurried thoughts and loosen my grip on self-sufficiency so that I may receive what you freely give.

As I take the bread, draw me back to your body given in love. As I receive the cup, remind me of the covenant sealed through your sacrifice. Keep these familiar elements from becoming ordinary through repetition. Awaken me again to the depth of your grace: you gave yourself for me while knowing me completely, and you continue to welcome me with mercy.

At this table, bring the Christian story near. Remind me of the life you lived, the love you embodied, the suffering you endured, and the death you willingly faced. Remind me also that the table points beyond death—that the crucified Christ is risen, present with His people, and preparing a feast in the kingdom yet to come.

Meet me here, Lord—not only in the thoughts of my mind, but in this tangible act of remembrance and worship. Through bread I can touch and a cup I can receive, teach me that grace is not an abstract idea. It is your love offered, your forgiveness extended, and your presence welcomed with open hands.

Search me as I approach. Reveal the sins I need to confess, the wounds I have tried to conceal, and the relationships that remain unreconciled. Free me from coming to your table while withholding grace from another. You gather many people around one table and make us one body; teach me to recognize my need for them and my responsibility to love them.

Where I am weary, renew me.
Where I am ashamed, assure me of your mercy.
Where I am distracted, return my attention to you.
Where I am divided, make me whole.
Where I have forgotten, help me remember.

May Communion form in me the life it proclaims: a life received as gift, broken open in love, poured out in service, and shared with others. Send me from the table more attentive to your presence, more grateful for your sacrifice, and more willing to become an expression of your grace in the world.

Until the day when faith becomes sight and we feast together in your kingdom, keep drawing me back to the table—to remember, to receive, and to be renewed.

In your holy name I pray.

Amen.
