Gracious God,

You welcome me before I have anything to offer. You receive me not because I have prepared myself perfectly, but because generosity belongs to your heart. Teach me to reflect that welcome in the way I make room for others.

I confess how carefully I protect my time, space, attention, and energy. I can treat interruption as intrusion and inconvenience as something to avoid. When life feels demanding, my world becomes smaller, and I notice only what requires something from me.

Enlarge my heart.

Free me from imagining that hospitality requires an impressive home, a perfect meal, or effortless warmth. Keep me from turning welcome into performance. What people need most may not be polished surroundings, but a place where they can exhale, speak honestly, and know that their presence is not a burden.

Help me notice those who are easily overlooked: the newcomer standing alone, the neighbor whose name I have not learned, the person whose story moves slowly, and the one who wonders whether there is room for them. Give me courage to cross the small distances that exclusion creates.

Teach me to offer more than physical space. Make me generous with attention. Help me listen without hurrying, ask questions without prying, and receive another person without trying to manage who they should become. Let my welcome honor their dignity, boundaries, and freedom.

When hospitality interrupts my plans, soften my resistance. Show me when love is asking for an open chair, a shared meal, a thoughtful message, practical help, or a few unhurried minutes. May I recognize that ordinary gestures can carry extraordinary grace.

Give me wisdom about my limits. Generosity does not require the neglect of health, safety, or necessary rest. Teach me to offer what I can freely and honestly rather than from resentment or compulsion. Let healthy boundaries preserve my capacity to welcome with sincerity.

Guard me from extending hospitality only to those who resemble me, agree with me, or can return the favor. Broaden my table and my imagination. Help me receive the stranger without romanticizing difference and welcome the familiar without taking them for granted.

May those who encounter me receive some reflection of your heart—not because I have solved their needs, but because I have made space for their humanity.

Today, show me one person for whom I can make room. Let my welcome be simple, attentive, and genuine. Through conversation, generosity, listening, or presence, may someone feel seen and received.

In the name of Jesus, who welcomed strangers, ate with the excluded, and prepared a place for us.

Amen.
