A Prayer for Mentoring
A prayer for sharing experience with humility, listening before advising, and helping another person grow into their own God-given calling.
Gracious God,
You have accompanied me through experiences that have shaped who I am. Some brought joy and confidence; others exposed my limits, corrected my assumptions, or taught me through failure. Nothing surrendered to your grace is wasted.
Show me how the life I have lived might become a gift to someone else.
Keep me from treating wisdom as something I possess because of age, position, or experience. Whatever insight I have gained came through people who guided me, mistakes that humbled me, mercy that restored me, and your patience throughout it all. Let gratitude, not superiority, shape what I share.
Teach me to listen before offering advice. Help me understand the person in front of me—their questions, circumstances, gifts, and hopes—rather than assuming their journey should resemble mine. My experience may illuminate a path, but it should never become a map they are required to follow.
Give me the courage to share more than polished successes. Let me speak honestly about choices I regret, lessons I learned slowly, and places where healing is still taking place. May my vulnerability offer companionship rather than make the conversation about me.
Guard me from the desire to appear indispensable. Mentoring is not control, possession, or the creation of a smaller version of myself. Help me recognize and encourage gifts that differ from my own. May the person I accompany become more fully who you have called them to be.
Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain quiet. Keep me from offering quick answers to questions that deserve patience. Help me ask what opens reflection, encourage without flattering, challenge without diminishing, and tell the truth without forgetting tenderness.
Make me receptive as well as generous. The person I mentor may carry insight I need, ask questions I have avoided, or reveal assumptions I have never examined. Let this relationship remain mutual enough for both of us to grow.
Teach me to honor boundaries and confidentiality. Help me offer steady presence without creating dependence or taking responsibility for decisions that belong to another person. When needs extend beyond my wisdom or ability, give me humility to help them seek more appropriate support.
Today, bring to mind one honest experience that might strengthen another person. Show me how to share it without centering myself, overstating its lesson, or forcing its relevance. Let my words be offered with humility and received in freedom.
May the joys, failures, healing, and growth of my life become part of your generous work—wisdom passed along not as certainty, but as faithful companionship.
In the name of Jesus, who taught through stories, questions, shared life, and patient presence.
Amen.
