A Prayer for Mindfulness and Attentiveness
A prayer for returning gently to the present moment, noticing our thoughts and emotions honestly, and becoming more attentive to God, others, and ordinary grace.
Gracious God,
I am here, but so often my attention is elsewhere.
My body occupies the present moment while my mind returns to what has already happened or races ahead to what might. Regret pulls me backward. Anxiety leans into tomorrow. Meanwhile, the life you have given me is unfolding now—and I barely notice it.
Call me back.
Help me feel my feet upon the ground and the breath moving through my body. Let me notice where I am tense, weary, restless, or at ease. These are not inconveniences to dismiss but part of the truth I bring into your presence.
Teach me to observe my thoughts without being ruled by every one of them. When fear appears, help me name it. When anger rises, slow me before it becomes harm. When sorrow surfaces, keep me from reaching immediately for distraction. When joy arrives quietly, let me receive it before the moment passes.
I do not seek awareness merely to become absorbed in myself. Turn my attention outward. Help me notice the person whose voice has grown quiet, the beauty I have stopped seeing, the need concealed inside an ordinary interruption. Attention is one way love begins.
Make me present to you, Lord—not because you have suddenly arrived, but because I have finally become still enough to recognize that you were already here.
Guard me from treating mindfulness as another achievement. I will become distracted. My mind will wander. Teach me to return gently, without irritation or shame. Each return can become a small act of trust.
Let attentiveness lead to wisdom. Before I react, create a pause. Before I speak, help me listen. Before I hurry past discomfort, ask me to remain long enough to understand what it may reveal.
Today, awaken me to the ordinary holiness of this moment: light entering a room, the sound of another person’s laughter, work waiting to be done, a body asking for care, a world held in your mercy.
I release the moment already gone. I entrust to you the hour that has not yet come. Meet me here.
In the name of Jesus, who noticed those others overlooked and gave his full presence to the person before him.
Amen.
