A Prayer for Simplicity

A prayer for recognizing what has crowded the heart, releasing what no longer serves life, and discovering greater freedom, clarity, and contentment in God.

A simple wooden table holds bread, a ceramic bowl, and a single green branch beside an open sunlit window.
Simplicity creates room—not for emptiness, but for clearer attention to God, others, and what matters most.

Gracious God,

You have given me enough for a life of faithfulness, yet I am easily persuaded that I need more—more possessions, more activity, more information, more certainty. What begins as abundance can slowly become weight. What promises freedom can quietly take possession of my attention.

Teach me to recognize what is crowding my heart.

Show me what I continue to carry simply because I have grown accustomed to its weight. Reveal the commitments sustained by guilt, the possessions kept from fear, and the distractions I reach for without thinking. Help me distinguish between what serves life and what merely fills it.

I confess that I sometimes use accumulation to reassure myself. I hold tightly to things because they create the appearance of security. I fill silence with noise because stillness may reveal what I would rather avoid. I add responsibilities because being needed can feel easier than being known.

Meet me there, Lord.

Simplicity is not emptiness, and it is not deprivation for its own sake. Teach me that it is the freedom to give my attention to what matters most. Clear away what fragments me so I can become more present to you, more available to others, and more honest within my own life.

Give me wisdom before I acquire something new. Give me courage before I agree to another demand. Help me notice when convenience has become dependence, when busyness has become avoidance, and when enough has quietly become not enough.

Where I can release a possession, make me generous. Where I need to release a commitment, make me truthful. Where I must release an expectation, make me free.

And where my life cannot be simplified—where responsibilities are real and burdens cannot simply be set down—grant me an undivided heart. Even amid complexity, anchor my attention in you.

Teach me to receive ordinary gifts without needing to improve or multiply them: daily bread, meaningful work, honest conversation, a place to rest. Let contentment grow where comparison once lived.

Today, show me one thing I can release. Then help me let it go without ceremony or regret. May the space it leaves behind become room for peace, gratitude, and love.

In the name of Jesus, who lived with open hands and taught us where true treasure is found.

Amen.
