A Prayer for Sobriety
A prayer for examining the habits and attachments we use to escape, receiving God’s mercy without shame, and taking honest steps toward clarity, support, and freedom.
Gracious God,
You call me to live awake—to be present to you, honest with myself, and available to those around me. Yet I confess how readily I reach for anything that promises relief from what I do not want to feel.
When discomfort rises, I look for escape. When life feels uncertain, I reach for control. When I am lonely, anxious, exhausted, or wounded, I may turn toward habits that offer temporary comfort while quietly carrying me farther from freedom. Some of these patterns are obvious; others hide behind what appears ordinary or harmless. You see them all, and you meet me there with truth and mercy.
Give me the courage to ask what I am trying not to feel. Help me recognize what I use to numb pain, silence fear, avoid responsibility, or fill an emptiness that cannot be healed by excess. Bring these places into your light—not so that I will be humiliated, but so that I may become whole.
Free me from shame, Lord. Shame tells me to hide, deny, and struggle alone. Your grace invites me to tell the truth and receive help. Remind me that admitting vulnerability is not failure. It is often the first movement toward freedom.
Where a habit has become stronger than my intentions, lead me toward trustworthy support. Give me humility to seek wise counsel, honest accountability, professional care, or a community of recovery when needed. Protect me from the pride that insists I should overcome every struggle alone. Let your grace reach me through the people you place beside me.
Teach me to remain present when I would rather escape. Help me sit honestly with discomfort long enough to understand what lies beneath it. Show me healthier ways to receive comfort, tend pain, and respond to the needs of my body, mind, and soul.
When temptation feels urgent, create a small space in which I can choose differently. When I stumble, keep me from surrendering to despair. Help me return to truth, receive mercy, and take the next faithful step. Let progress be measured not by perfection, but by growing honesty, freedom, and willingness to begin again.
Form in me a clear mind and an undivided heart. Loosen the grip of anything that diminishes my ability to love faithfully or remain attentive to your presence. Restore what compulsion has taken, heal what avoidance has left unattended, and awaken within me a deeper desire for the life you offer.
Today, help me examine one habit or attachment without excuse and without condemnation. Show me what it has promised, what it has cost, and what step toward freedom you are inviting me to take.
In the name of Jesus, who meets us in truth, carries no contempt for our weakness, and leads us patiently into freedom.
Amen.
