A Prayer for Solitude

A prayer for stepping away from distraction and performance to encounter God and ourselves with greater honesty, freedom, and attentiveness.

A solitary wooden bench overlooks a calm, mist-covered lake in the gentle light of early morning.
Solitude is not abandonment, but a quiet place where performance falls away and God’s companionship becomes more deeply known.

Gracious God,

You know me beneath every role I occupy and every impression I try to maintain. You see the person I am when no one is watching, when there is nothing to accomplish and no expectation to meet. Invite me into solitude today, where I can become more honest before you.

I confess how readily I fill my life with activity, conversation, and distraction. Sometimes I remain busy because stillness feels uncomfortable. I seek the company of noise because I am uncertain what I might discover in quiet aloneness. Yet you do not lead me there to expose me harshly. You meet me with patience, truth, and mercy.

As the distractions fall away, help me notice what is stirring within me. Bring my fears, desires, resentments, and unspoken longings gently into view. Show me where I have been living from anxiety, seeking approval, or hiding behind productivity. Give me courage to remain present without rushing to explain, correct, or escape what I find.

Teach me that being alone is not the same as being abandoned. In solitude, remind me that I am already known and held by you. I do not need to perform for your attention, earn your welcome, or make this time spiritually impressive. Your presence is gift enough.

Let solitude free me from dependence upon the approval of others without making me indifferent to their love. Guard me from turning this practice into isolation or withdrawal. May time alone with you restore my capacity to return to community with greater patience, honesty, and generosity.

Where loneliness accompanies me, be especially near. Help me distinguish the solitude that renews from the isolation that diminishes. Give me wisdom to know when I need quiet and when I need the presence and care of another person.

In this unhurried space, teach me to enjoy your companionship. Let me discover that I am more than what I produce, more than what others expect, and more than the stories I tell about myself. Root my identity in the quiet assurance that I belong to you.

Today, help me remain with you without distraction or unnecessary activity. May this solitude become a place of truth without condemnation, rest without escape, and companionship without performance.

In the name of Jesus, who withdrew to solitary places and returned with love for the world.

Amen.
