A Prayer for Teachability

A prayer for receiving correction with humility, listening without defensiveness, and remaining open to the people and experiences through which God continues to teach us.

Two adults sit across a wooden table in quiet conversation as one speaks and the other listens attentively.
Teachability begins when we no longer need to appear finished and become willing to listen, discern, and grow.

Gracious God,

You have not asked me to be complete, only willing.

Still, I prefer the safety of appearing capable. I like knowing the answer, understanding the situation, and feeling in control. When my limitations become visible, defensiveness rises quickly. I explain. I justify. Sometimes I prepare my reply before another person has finished speaking.

Give me a teachable heart.

When correction comes, quiet the instinct to protect my image. Help me listen for what may be true, even when the words are imperfectly offered or difficult to receive. Let discomfort become an invitation to reflection rather than an immediate reason to withdraw.

Teach me to separate being corrected from being rejected. My mistakes do not erase my worth. My blind spots do not place me beyond your patience. Because I am secure in your love, I can admit that I was wrong, that I do not know, or that I still have room to grow.

Thank you for the people through whom you teach me—the wise and experienced, the young and overlooked, the friend who speaks gently, and the stranger whose perspective unsettles my assumptions. Keep me from deciding too quickly who is qualified to help form me.

Give me discernment as well as openness. Teachability is not gullibility, and humility does not require me to accept every criticism as true. Help me weigh what I hear prayerfully, retain what leads toward truth and love, and release what is careless, manipulative, or unkind.

Where feedback reveals harm I have caused, give me courage to take responsibility and make repair. Where it exposes pride, soften me. Where it uncovers a gift I have failed to recognize, help me receive encouragement without embarrassment.

Keep success from making me rigid. Keep experience from convincing me that I have nothing left to learn. Let knowledge deepen my wonder rather than narrow it.

Today, help me ask an honest question and remain quiet long enough to hear the answer. When someone offers insight, slow my defenses. When I discover a limitation, let me meet it with curiosity instead of shame.

Form in me the humility of a disciple—one who follows, listens, practices, fails, learns, and follows again.

In the name of Jesus, who invited ordinary people to become his students and welcomed those who came seeking truth.

Amen.
