A Prayer for Unplugging
A prayer for stepping away from screens and constant digital input, allowing silence to reveal what lies beneath the noise and restore our capacity for attention.
Gracious God,
The world is rarely quiet now.
News arrives without pause. Notifications call for attention. One image gives way to another, and even a moment of waiting can become an excuse to reach for a screen. I confess how instinctively I turn toward digital noise whenever silence, boredom, or discomfort begins to surface.
Teach me to notice that impulse.
Technology has given me useful tools and meaningful ways to connect. I am grateful for them. But keep what is useful from becoming controlling. Show me when a tool has begun to shape my habits, govern my emotions, or claim attention that rightly belongs elsewhere.
As I unplug, let me feel the restlessness rather than immediately escape it. What am I afraid I might miss? What feeling am I trying not to feel? What hunger have I mistaken for the need for more information?
Meet me beneath the noise.
When anxiety surfaces, help me bring it to you. When boredom appears, let it become an opening for imagination and wonder. When silence feels awkward, teach me to remain. I may discover that emptiness is not empty at all.
Restore my ability to give one thing my full attention. Help me look into another person’s face without glancing toward a device. Let me eat a meal without consuming information beside it. Teach me to walk, wait, work, and rest without needing every unoccupied moment to be filled.
Free me from the false urgency created by constant access. Not every message requires an immediate answer. Not every development requires my opinion. Not everything happening in the world must enter my mind at once.
Give me wisdom when I reconnect. Help me choose what deserves attention and what may pass without me. Make me less vulnerable to outrage, comparison, and endless novelty. Let my use of technology serve love rather than weaken my capacity for it.
Today, as I set the screen aside, return me to the life immediately before me: the room I inhabit, the person beside me, the thoughts within me, and your presence surrounding all of it.
Let quiet become spacious again.
In the name of Jesus, who withdrew from the crowds and made room to listen.
Amen.
