A Prayer for Worship
Gracious God,
You call us not only to yourself, but also into a people gathered in your name. Yet I confess how easily I treat faith as something private—shaped by my preferences, arranged around my convenience, and practiced at a comfortable distance from others. Remind me that I was never meant to follow you alone.
When I gather with your people, quiet the distractions that divide my attention. Free me from evaluating every prayer, song, Scripture, or silence according to whether it suits me. Replace the posture of a spectator with the openness of a worshiper. Help me arrive not asking what I will receive, but ready to offer you my attention, gratitude, confession, and praise.
Teach me to recognize your presence within the gathered body of Christ: in voices singing with confidence and voices barely able to sing; in familiar faces and unfamiliar ones; in children who move restlessly, elders who have worshiped through many seasons, and those who have entered carrying burdens no one else can see.
As we pray together, remind me that my concerns are not the only ones brought before you. As we confess, humble me with the knowledge that all of us depend upon your mercy. As Scripture is proclaimed, give us ears to hear your Word together. As we sing, gather our many voices into one offering of praise.
When another person’s faith is strong, let it strengthen me. When someone beside me is weary, let my presence help carry them. When disagreement or difference tempts me to withdraw, teach me that Christian community is formed not by sameness, but by our shared belonging to Christ.
Lift my attention beyond the narrow boundaries of my own life. Reconnect me to your Church across generations, cultures, traditions, and nations—to the great communion of people who have worshiped you in sanctuaries and homes, in freedom and persecution, in celebration and grief.
May our worship shape more than a single hour. Send us from the gathered community renewed in love, strengthened for service, attentive to suffering, and prepared to embody the grace we proclaim. Let what we offer with our lips become visible through our lives.
Today, help me worship with openness rather than preference, attentiveness rather than distraction, and gratitude rather than expectation. Remind me that I belong to you—and, through you, to your people.
In the name of Jesus, who gathers us into one body.
Amen.
