# Ashes at the Office

*Humility, Trust, and the Work of Beginning Again*

*February 18 — Ash Wednesday | Faith & Vocation*

Today, many Christians will hear these words:

*“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”*

Ash Wednesday interrupts our illusions.

Illusions of control.

Illusions of permanence.

Illusions that our careers, competence, or reputations secure us.

It reminds us that we are finite.

Dependent.

Fragile.

And that truth reshapes how we approach work.

**Humility is the foundation of trust — with God and with others.**

**1\. Ashes Level the Room**

In the workplace, power and status quietly organize everything.

Titles matter.

Experience matters.

Performance matters.

But ashes level the hierarchy.

Executive and intern alike are dust.

Success does not erase mortality.

Failure does not define worth.

Ash Wednesday reminds us that identity does not rest in productivity.

And that frees us.

**2\. Repentance Has a Place at Work**

Repentance isn’t just for private sins.

It also touches:

- how we’ve used power
- how we’ve spoken under pressure
- where we’ve compromised
- where resentment took root
- where pride shaped decisions

Faith & vocation includes honest self-examination.

Where have I been defensive instead of humble?

Where have I protected image over integrity?

Where have I failed to love?

Ash Wednesday gives us permission to name these without despair.

Because repentance is not humiliation.

It is realignment.

**3\. Rebuilding Trust Begins With Humility**

Yesterday we talked about trust being rebuilt slowly.

Ash Wednesday deepens that conversation.

Trust cannot be rebuilt without humility.

If you were wrong:

- own it fully
- without excuse
- without self-justification
- without deflection

If you were hurt:

- acknowledge the wound honestly
- without bitterness
- without pretending it didn’t matter

Ashes remind us that no one at work is flawless.

We are all in need of grace.

**4\. Mortality Clarifies What Matters**

Ash Wednesday whispers:

One day, the deadlines will not matter.

The titles will not matter.

The metrics will not matter.

What will matter is:

- who you became
- how you treated people
- whether you walked humbly
- whether you loved faithfully

This does not make work meaningless.

It makes it proportionate.

**5\. A Practice for Ash Wednesday**

Today, pause before entering your workplace — physically or digitally — and pray:

**“God, form humility in me.**

**Let me work faithfully, knowing I am dust and deeply loved.”**

Then carry that awareness into:

- meetings
- emails
- conversations
- decisions

Ashes do not weaken vocation.

They purify it.

**The Invitation**

February 18 does not ask you to withdraw from your work.

It asks you to enter it differently.

With humility instead of self-importance.

With repentance instead of defensiveness.

With grace instead of pride.

With perspective instead of panic.

You are dust.

And you are deeply loved.

That combination changes how you work.

Monday through Saturday.

Even in the office.
