A different opinion. A misunderstanding. A conflict. A deeply held conviction that collides with someone else’s. In those moments, something rises within us. The desire to: - defend - persuade - withdraw - win Not because we don’t value love. Because we often fear that yielding relationship means surrendering truth. But Scripture offers another way. Unity is not the absence of difference. It is the presence of love within difference. 1\. Unity Is Not Uniformity Christian unity has never required everyone to think identically. The early Church was remarkably diverse. Different: - backgrounds - cultures - personalities - experiences Yet they were continually called toward one thing: Love that was greater than preference. Unity does not erase distinction. It teaches us how to live faithfully within it. 2\. Conflict Reveals What We Protect Disagreement has a way of exposing us. It reveals: - our pride - our fears - our need to be understood - our attachment to being right Conflict is rarely only about the issue itself. It often uncovers deeper places where God is still shaping our hearts. 3\. Listening Is an Act of Humility Unity begins long before agreement. It begins with listening. Not listening in order to prepare a better argument. Listening in order to understand. This requires humility. The willingness to believe that another person, made in God’s image, has something worth hearing—even when we ultimately disagree. 4\. Peace Requires Intention Unity does not happen accidentally. It requires: - patience - forgiveness - gentleness - self-control - a willingness to seek understanding before victory These qualities do not weaken truth. They strengthen love. 5\. Christ Is Our Model Jesus never compromised truth. But neither did He use truth as a weapon. He confronted. He corrected. He invited. He restored. Again and again, His life demonstrated that truth and love are never enemies. They belong together. 6\. Unity Protects the Witness of the Church Jesus prayed that His followers would be one. Not because disagreement would disappear. But because unity itself would point people toward Him. When we remain committed to one another through disagreement, we reveal something the world rarely sees: A love that is stronger than division. 7\. A Practice for June 29 Today, think of one relationship where tension, difference, or misunderstanding exists. Before responding, pray: “God, help me protect this relationship without compromising love or truth.” Then choose one act of peace: - listen more carefully - speak more gently - extend forgiveness - assume the best - make the first move toward reconciliation The Invitation June 29 reminds us that unity is not something we stumble into. It is something we pursue. Not because differences don’t matter. But because love matters more. God is continually forming people who know how to: - speak truth with grace - listen with humility - remain in relationship - reflect the reconciling heart of Christ May we become those people.
