*(The Spiritual Discipline of Practicing the Presence)*
*May 20 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

It’s easy to imagine God’s presence belonging primarily to certain moments.

Church services.
Prayer time.
Scripture reading.
Silence and retreat.

And while God certainly meets us there, the danger is subtle:

We begin dividing life into:

- sacred moments
- and ordinary ones

As though God is more present in one than the other.

**Practicing the presence teaches us that all of life unfolds before God.**

Not just the obviously spiritual parts.

**1\. Most of Life Feels Ordinary**

Daily life is filled with:

- conversations
- responsibilities
- interruptions
- errands
- meals
- work
- small moments that seem spiritually unremarkable

And because they feel ordinary, we often move through them unconsciously.

Distracted.
Hurried.
Disconnected.

The practice of presence gently interrupts that drift.

**2\. God Is Already Here**

One of the deepest shifts in this discipline is realizing:

You are not trying to bring God into the moment.

He is already there.

The practice is not creating presence.

It is becoming aware of it.

That awareness slowly changes:

- your pace
- your attention
- your responses
- your sense of peace

**3\. Attention Becomes Prayer**

Practicing the presence does not always require words.

Sometimes it is:

- noticing
- pausing
- becoming aware again
- quietly acknowledging God within the moment

A breath.
A glance upward.
A silent return.

Ordinary moments become places of communion.

**4\. The Sacred and Secular Begin to Blur**

Over time, something beautiful happens.

You stop thinking:
“This is my spiritual life.”

And:
“This is everything else.”

Because all of life begins to feel connected.

Work.
Rest.
Conversation.
Silence.
Responsibility.

All of it unfolds before God.

This does not make life less ordinary.

It makes ordinary life more sacred.

**5\. Presence Creates Peace**

Much of our anxiety comes from divided attention.

Part of us is:

- ahead of ourselves
- replaying the past
- worrying about what comes next

Practicing the presence returns us gently to:

- this moment
- this breath
- this conversation
- this task

And in that return, peace slowly grows.

**6\. A Practice for May 20**

Today, pause intentionally several times.

Not long.

Just enough to acknowledge:

**“God is here too.”**

At:

- your desk
- your meal
- your commute
- your conversation
- your interruption

Return your attention gently.

Again and again.

**The Invitation**

May 20 reminds us that God’s presence is not confined to spiritual environments.

He is present:

- in the ordinary
- in the unnoticed
- in the everyday rhythms of life

Practicing the presence teaches us to stop rushing past the moments where God is already near.

You do not need to escape ordinary life to encounter Him.

You only need to become more attentive within it.

Monday through Saturday.

Moment by moment.
