*(The Spiritual Discipline of Practicing the Presence)*
*May 22 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

Most of life feels ordinary.

Emails.
Meals.
Errands.
Conversations.
Interruptions.
Work.
Rest.

And because these moments feel ordinary, we often move through them automatically.

Distracted.
Hurried.
Somewhere else mentally.

But practicing the presence begins with a simple realization:

**There is no such thing as a God-forsaken moment for the person who belongs to Him.**

God is here too.

**1\. We Divide Life Into Sacred and Secular**

Without realizing it, many of us imagine God’s presence as stronger in certain places:

- church
- prayer time
- worship
- Scripture reading

And weaker in:

- meetings
- errands
- dishes
- commutes
- conversations

But the spiritual life was never meant to be divided that way.

All of life unfolds before God.

Not just the obviously spiritual parts.

**2\. Attention Drifts Constantly**

The challenge is rarely God’s absence.

It is our distraction.

Our attention is constantly pulled:

- toward worry
- toward planning
- toward screens
- toward hurry
- toward what comes next

And over time, we stop noticing the present moment entirely.

Practicing the presence gently trains attention to return.

Again and again.

**3\. God Is Already Present**

This discipline is not about trying to bring God into the moment.

He is already there.

The practice is becoming aware of what is already true.

That awareness changes:

- your pace
- your reactions
- your sense of peace
- the way you move through ordinary life

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

**4\. Ordinary Moments Become Sacred Attention**

Over time, the distinction between “spiritual moments” and “regular life” begins to soften.

A meal becomes gratitude.
A conversation becomes attentiveness.
A walk becomes prayer.
Work becomes presence.

Not because the activity changes.

Because your awareness changes.

**5\. Practicing the Presence Creates Peace**

Much of our inner anxiety comes from divided attention.

Part of us is:

- replaying the past
- anticipating the future
- carrying things we cannot control

Practicing the presence gently returns us to:

- this breath
- this task
- this conversation
- this moment with God

And that return creates quiet peace.

**6\. A Practice for May 22**

Today, pause several times intentionally.

Not long.

Just enough to acknowledge:

**“God is here too.”**

At:

- your desk
- your meal
- your commute
- your conversation
- your interruption

Then continue slowly.

**The Invitation**

May 22 reminds us that God’s presence is not reserved for extraordinary moments.

He is present:

- in the ordinary
- in the repetitive
- in the unnoticed parts of daily life

The practice is not creating sacred moments.

It is learning to recognize that all of life is already unfolding before God.

Monday through Saturday.

Moment by moment.
