# Keeping a Teachable Heart

*May 29 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

Most of us enjoy learning.

What we struggle with is being taught.

Especially when what needs to be learned reveals:

- a blind spot
- a weakness
- a limitation
- a place where we are wrong

And yet, this is often where growth begins.

**Teachability is the willingness to remain open to growth even when growth feels uncomfortable.**

**1\. We Prefer Competence**

There is a natural desire to feel:

- informed
- capable
- prepared
- in control

We like being the person with answers.

The one who understands.

The one who knows what to do.

But discipleship repeatedly places us in situations where our limitations become visible.

And that visibility can feel threatening.

**2\. Defensiveness Blocks Growth**

One of the easiest responses to correction is resistance.

Not always outwardly.

Internally.

We explain.  
Justify.  
Dismiss.  
Protect.

Not because we are unwilling to grow.

Because we are protecting our sense of competence.

Teachability asks us to loosen that grip.

**3\. God Often Teaches Through Other People**

One of the surprising realities of spiritual growth is how often God uses others to shape us.

Through:

- feedback
- correction
- encouragement
- perspective
- uncomfortable conversations

Not every opinion deserves equal weight.

But teachability remains open to the possibility that God may be speaking through someone else.

**4\. Humility Creates Room**

Humility is not thinking less of yourself.

It is becoming less committed to appearing complete.

A teachable heart can say:

- “I didn’t see that.”
- “I was wrong.”
- “I need to learn.”
- “Thank you for showing me.”

And strangely, this becomes freeing.

Because you no longer need to protect an image of perfection.

**5\. Growth Requires Softness**

Over time, people become either:

- softer
- or more rigid

Teachability keeps the heart soft.

Not naïve.

Not gullible.

Receptive.

Able to:

- listen
- learn
- adapt
- remain open to God’s shaping work

**6\. A Practice for May 29**

Today, invite honest feedback from someone you trust.

Then listen.

Not preparing a response.

Not defending yourself.

Simply listening.

Afterward, pray:

**“God, help me receive what is true and useful here.”**

Remain open.

**The Invitation**

May 29 reminds us that discipleship is not about arriving at completeness.

It is about remaining open to transformation.

A teachable heart does not fear growth.

It welcomes it.

Because the goal is not to appear finished.

The goal is to continue becoming.

Monday through Saturday.

One lesson at a time.
