*Presence When There Is Nothing to Distract You*

*January 27 — The Discipline of Presence*

Stillness sounds appealing — until it arrives uninvited.

No power.

No background noise.

No constant updates.

No distractions waiting on demand.

Just quiet.

And for many of us, quiet feels unsettling.

**Presence deepens when distraction is no longer available.**

**1\. Distraction Is Often How We Cope**

We rarely sit with stillness by choice.

We fill space with:

- noise
- screens
- movement
- tasks
- mental planning

Not because we’re shallow —

but because stillness reveals what we carry.

Presence doesn’t rush to fill the quiet.

It listens within it.

**2\. Stillness Is Not the Same as Escape**

There is a difference between stillness and avoidance.

Escape numbs.

Stillness awakens.

Stillness helps us notice:

- anxiety beneath activity
- fatigue beneath productivity
- grief beneath busyness
- gratitude beneath noise

God does not use stillness to expose us —

He uses it to meet us honestly.

**3\. Jesus Withdrew Without Disconnecting**

Jesus withdrew to quiet places —

not to escape responsibility,

but to remain rooted.

Stillness was how He stayed aligned.

Presence in stillness is not passive.

It is attentive.

**4\. Let the Quiet Be What It Is**

You don’t need to make stillness meaningful.

You don’t need insights.

You don’t need clarity.

You don’t need resolution.

Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is remain present —

without trying to turn the moment into something useful.

**A Practice for January 27**

If things are quiet today, try this:

Sit.

Breathe.

Notice one thing you usually overlook.

And pray:

**“God, I am here with You.”**

That is enough.

**The Invitation**

January 27 reminds us that stillness is not something to fear.

It is a place where presence grows deeper —

not because anything changes,

but because we finally notice what is already there.

This month at *Disciple to Faith*, we’re exploring what it looks like to follow Jesus Monday through Saturday — practicing presence not as theory, but as discipleship in everyday life.

And sometimes, the most faithful thing you can do…

is remain present when it would be easier not to.
