*(The Spiritual Discipline of Chastity)*
*June 17 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

Desire is one of the most powerful forces in human life.

It shapes:

- decisions
- relationships
- habits
- dreams
- longings

And because desire is powerful, it often becomes confusing.

We live in a culture that frequently treats desire as something that should be:

- satisfied immediately
- followed automatically
- trusted without question

Yet Scripture offers a different vision.

**The goal is not the elimination of desire, but the formation of desire.**

**1\. Desire Is Not the Enemy**

One of the great misunderstandings surrounding chastity is the assumption that desire itself is bad.

It is not.

God created human beings with:

- longing
- affection
- attraction
- intimacy
- passion

The question is not whether desire exists.

The question is:

What is shaping it?

**2\. Chastity Is About Integration**

At its heart, chastity is not simply restraint.

It is wholeness.

A life where:

- desire
- love
- commitment
- integrity

move together rather than pulling in different directions.

Chastity asks:

How can my desires serve love rather than consume it?

**3\. Immediate Gratification Is Not Freedom**

Our culture often assumes that freedom means acting on every desire.

But experience teaches otherwise.

Many desires:

- change
- intensify
- mislead
- promise more than they deliver

True freedom is not found in following every impulse.

It is found in learning to choose wisely.

**4\. Desire Often Reveals Something Deeper**

One of the gifts of this discipline is that it encourages honest reflection.

Beneath many desires we may discover:

- loneliness
- insecurity
- fear
- longing for connection
- longing to be known

Chastity invites us to look beneath the surface rather than simply reacting to what we feel.

**5\. Chastity Protects Human Dignity**

At its best, chastity teaches reverence.

Not only for ourselves.

For others.

It reminds us that people are not:

- objects
- distractions
- means to personal fulfillment

They are image-bearers worthy of honor, care, and love.

Chastity helps us relate to others with integrity rather than consumption.

**6\. Self-Control Creates Space for Love**

Many people view self-control as restriction.

But biblical self-control is actually freedom.

It creates the ability to:

- choose wisely
- love faithfully
- remain aligned with deeper values

Rather than being ruled by every impulse that appears.

**7\. Chastity Forms a Whole Heart**

Over time, this discipline teaches us to seek:

Not merely pleasure.

But:

- intimacy
- faithfulness
- integrity
- genuine love

The heart becomes less fragmented.

More aligned.

More capable of loving well.

**8\. A Practice for June 17**

Today, reflect on one area of desire or relationship.

Ask:

**“What is this desire ultimately seeking?”**

Then bring that answer honestly before God.

Pray:

**“God, shape my desires through Your wisdom, love, and faithfulness.”**

Remain open to what surfaces.

**The Invitation**

June 17 reminds us that chastity is not primarily about saying no.

It is about learning to say yes to something deeper.

A life where:

- desire is shaped by love
- freedom is shaped by wisdom
- relationships are shaped by dignity
- the heart is shaped by God

Because true wholeness is not found in unrestrained desire.

It is found in desire that has learned to love well.

Monday through Saturday.

One faithful choice at a time.
