Listening for God in the Ordinary
We tend to imagine that if God were going to speak to us, it would happen in dramatic ways — lightning bolts, burning bushes, neon signs in the night sky spelling out our name like He’s trying to land a plane.
But in Scripture, God does something far more surprising:
He slips into the quiet moments.
He whispers through the ordinary.
He comes disguised as daily life.
Most of us aren’t missing God because He’s not speaking.
We’re missing Him because we’ve been trained to listen for the wrong volume.
God’s “Indoor Voice”
When the prophet Elijah expected God in the wind, earthquake, and fire, he found Him instead in the “still, small voice.”
Not because God can’t shout — but because He prefers to be near.
God is far more likely to meet you:
- in the silence before your kids wake up
- in the first sip of coffee
- in the kindness of a coworker
- in the sudden compassion you feel in a tense moment
- in the tug on your heart to send a quick text of encouragement
- in the sense of peace that catches you off guard
- in the gentle conviction that rises without shame
These aren’t emotional coincidences.
They’re invitations.
Listening Is Less About Noise and More About Attention
You don’t need a monastery.
You don’t need perfect quiet.
You don’t need three hours and a journal that looks like it belongs on Instagram.
You need awareness.
Try asking these simple questions throughout your day:
- “God, what are You saying right now?”
- “Where are You nudging me?”
- “Who are You inviting me to notice?”
- “What grace did I just miss because I was in a hurry?”
This is practicing presence.
Not added tasks — added awareness.
God Often Speaks Through People and Patterns
We often overlook the fact that God uses:
- the repeated comment from three different people
- the Scripture verse that keeps resurfacing
- the moment of conviction that won’t let go
- the sense of gratitude pointing to a deeper truth
- the feeling that something isn’t right
- the opportunity that opens unexpectedly
God doesn’t just speak to you —
He speaks through your life.
Listening Is a Posture, Not a Skill
Listening for God isn’t something you master like woodworking or sourdough baking.
It’s something you grow into.
Here’s the secret:
You’ll hear God more clearly when you stop trying to make Him sound a certain way.
Allow Him to speak softly.
Allow Him to speak slowly.
Allow Him to speak through moments you’d normally ignore.
The Invitation
God is not hiding.
He’s not distant.
He’s not waiting for you to achieve spiritual perfection before He draws near.
He’s here.
In the ordinary.
In the small.
In the unnoticed.
In the quiet.
In the Tuesday afternoon moment you’re tempted to rush past.
If you slow down just a little, you’ll find that the God of the universe often speaks in a whisper — not because He is far away, but because He is close enough that a whisper will do.
