Beginning Again
(Why Every Season Starts in the Same Place)
May 1 — Discipleship in Real Life
There is a quiet moment that comes after every season.
Not dramatic.
Not marked by anything obvious.
Just a sense:
Something has ended.
Something is beginning.
And with that, a familiar question:
Where do I start now?
1. We Want a New Starting Point
When we begin again, we often look for something new.
A new idea.
A new practice.
A new direction.
Something that feels like progress.
But discipleship rarely begins in a new place.
It returns to a familiar one.
2. The Starting Point Is Always the Same
Every season of growth begins here:
Attention.
Not performance.
Not effort.
Not outcomes.
Just:
Noticing where you are.
Becoming aware again.
Returning to presence.
3. You Don’t Build on Intensity
It’s tempting to begin with momentum.
To:
- set new goals
- make strong commitments
- push forward quickly
But what lasts is not built on intensity.
It’s built on awareness.
The kind that:
- notices drift
- recognizes distraction
- returns gently
This is where everything begins again.
4. Beginning Again Is Not Starting Over
There is a difference.
Starting over feels like:
- losing progress
- going back
- undoing what was built
Beginning again is different.
You carry everything with you.
You don’t go back.
You move forward from where you are —
with more awareness than before.
5. The Inner Life Shapes Everything Else
If April taught us anything, it’s this:
What is formed within you
shapes what flows outward.
So before we move into anything new,
we return here:
The inner life.
The place where:
- attention is trained
- presence is practiced
- awareness is restored
6. A Practice for May 1
Today, don’t try to build anything.
Just pause.
And ask:
“Where am I right now?”
Not where you should be.
Not where you want to be.
Just where you are.
Then stay there for a moment.
That’s the beginning.
The Invitation
May 1 reminds us that discipleship is not about moving on.
It’s about returning.
Again and again.
Not to something new.
To something true.
Attention.
Presence.
Awareness.
This is where every season begins.
Monday through Saturday.
Right where you are.
