**Where Your Attention Goes**

*(The Beginning of the Inner Life)*
*May 2 — Discipleship in Real Life*

Before anything changes outwardly,
something shifts inwardly.

Not behavior.
Not habits.

Attention.

**Your attention is the doorway to your inner life.**

And most of us don’t notice where it’s going.

**1\. Attention Moves Automatically**

Your attention is always moving.

Toward:

- thoughts
- worries
- tasks
- distractions
- conversations
- reactions

You don’t decide most of it.

It just goes.

And wherever it goes, your inner life follows.

**2\. What You Attend To Shapes You**

Over time, attention forms direction.

If your attention rests on:

- pressure → you become tense
- comparison → you become restless
- fear → you become guarded
- distraction → you become scattered

If it rests on:

- presence → you become steady
- truth → you become grounded
- awareness → you become clear

Nothing changes instantly.

But everything changes gradually.

**3\. We Rarely Question It**

Most of us don’t ask:

*Where is my attention right now?*

We assume:

- it’s necessary
- it’s justified
- it’s automatic

But discipleship begins when you start noticing.

Not to control it immediately.

Just to become aware of it.

**4\. Attention Can Be Gently Redirected**

You cannot force attention to stay.

But you can guide it.

Not harshly.

Gently.

Again and again.

This is not about perfection.

It’s about returning.

**5\. This Is Where the Inner Life Begins**

Before:

- prayer deepens
- habits form
- rhythms stabilize

There is this:

Noticing.

Seeing where your mind goes.
Seeing what holds it.
Seeing what pulls it away.

This is the beginning of everything.

**6\. A Practice for May 2**

At some point today, pause.

Just for a moment.

And ask:

**“Where is my attention right now?”**

Don’t judge it.

Just notice.

Then gently bring it back.

**The Invitation**

May 2 reminds us that discipleship doesn’t begin with doing more.

It begins with noticing more.

Your attention is not fixed.

It can return.

Again and again.

And every return
quietly reshapes your inner life.

Monday through Saturday.

Right where your attention is.
