*(The Spiritual Discipline of Rest)*
*May 23 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

Many people are tired in ways sleep alone cannot fix.

Not just physically.

But internally.

The soul grows weary from:

- constant urgency
- pressure
- endless attention
- carrying too much for too long

And often, we keep going anyway.

Because somewhere along the way, many of us learned:

- rest must be earned
- stopping is irresponsible
- productivity determines value

So even when exhaustion becomes obvious, we resist slowing down.

**Rest is not weakness.**
**It is part of how God cares for human beings.**

**1\. We Were Not Created for Constant Striving**

The human body and soul were never designed for nonstop output.

Yet many of us live as though:

- limits are failures
- exhaustion is normal
- overextension is maturity

Over time, this affects:

- relationships
- attention
- emotional health
- prayer
- presence

Rest interrupts that pattern.

Not because life becomes less demanding.

Because human beings remain finite.

**2\. Rest Exposes What Drives Us**

One reason rest feels difficult is that stopping reveals what has been pushing us.

When activity slows, we notice:

- anxiety
- guilt
- unfinished thoughts
- the fear of falling behind

Rest doesn’t create these things.

It reveals them.

And often, that revelation is uncomfortable.

**3\. Rest Requires Trust**

To rest honestly means accepting:

- the world continues without your constant effort
- not everything depends on you
- your worth is not tied to output

This is why rest becomes spiritual.

Because rest is an act of trust:

- trust that God remains present
- trust that you are held even when unproductive
- trust that your identity is deeper than accomplishment

**4\. Rest Is More Than Distraction**

Many things that look like rest are actually escape.

Scrolling.
Noise.
Constant stimulation.

True rest creates:

- space
- quiet
- renewal
- attentiveness

It allows the soul to breathe again.

Not because nothing matters.

Because you stop carrying everything all at once.

**5\. Rest Makes Presence Possible**

An exhausted person struggles to remain attentive.

Rest restores:

- clarity
- patience
- awareness
- emotional steadiness

It helps you become:

- more grounded before God
- more present with others
- less reactive within yourself

Rest is not separate from discipleship.

It supports it.

**6\. A Practice for May 23**

Today, intentionally step away from unnecessary activity.

Not to achieve rest perfectly.

Simply to receive it.

Put something down:

- productivity
- distraction
- pressure
- the need to prove yourself

Then ask:

**“What if rest is part of God’s care for me?”**

Remain there for a while.

**The Invitation**

May 23 reminds us that rest is not an interruption to spiritual life.

It is part of it.

You were not created to live endlessly exhausted.

God’s invitation to rest is not weakness.

It is wisdom.

Receive rest honestly.
Receive it without guilt.
Receive it as gift.

Monday through Saturday.

Even in the holy act of stopping.
