*(The Spiritual Discipline of Holy Communion)*
*May 9 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

There are moments in the Christian life when everything becomes simple again.

Bread.
Cup.
Table.

No performance.
No striving.
No need to prove anything.

Just an invitation:

**“Come.”**

**1\. Communion Returns Us to the Center**

Life has a way of pulling us outward.

Toward:

- distraction
- hurry
- responsibility
- self-sufficiency

And over time, it becomes easy to drift from the center of the story.

Holy Communion calls us back.

Not to an abstract idea.

To Christ Himself.

To His:

- sacrifice
- mercy
- presence
- invitation

Again and again.

**2\. We Receive What We Cannot Create**

One of the quiet truths of Communion is this:

You do not earn your place at the table.

You receive it.

That matters deeply.

Because much of life trains us to believe:

- worth must be achieved
- approval must be secured
- belonging must be proven

But at the table, grace is given.

Not achieved.

Received.

**3\. Communion Slows Us Down**

Communion interrupts hurry.

It asks us to:

- pause
- remember
- notice
- receive

In a world shaped by speed and distraction, this feels almost unnatural.

And yet, this slowing is part of the discipline.

Because love cannot be received hurriedly.

**4\. Christ Meets Us Through Tangible Things**

Communion reminds us that faith is not merely intellectual.

Bread is broken.
The cup is lifted.
Hands receive.

The Christian story is not only believed.

It is practiced.

Embodied.

Remembered through physical acts that draw our attention back to Christ’s presence.

**5\. Communion Restores Fellowship**

The table is never only personal.

It is shared.

Which means Communion gently reminds us:

- we do not follow Jesus alone
- grace gathers people together
- Christ forms a people, not just individuals

At the table:

- differences quiet
- striving softens
- identity is remembered

We come not because we are complete.

But because we are being welcomed.

**6\. A Practice for May 9**

Today, approach Communion slowly.

Before receiving:

- pause
- breathe
- become attentive

Then reflect on:

- Christ’s sacrifice
- Christ’s presence
- Christ’s invitation

Receive the bread and cup not as routine,
but as remembrance and renewal.

**The Invitation**

May 9 reminds us that Communion is not simply a ritual.

It is a return.

A return:

- to grace
- to presence
- to fellowship
- to the center of the story

You do not come to the table because you have everything together.

You come because Christ invites you.

Again.

And again.

Monday through Saturday.

At the table of grace.
