*(The Spiritual Discipline of Blessing Others)* 
*July 8 — Spiritual Disciplines | Discipleship in Real Life*

You never really know what another person is carrying.

The smile may hide grief.

The confidence may conceal discouragement.

The busyness may mask exhaustion.

Every person you meet is living a story you cannot fully see.

And because so much remains hidden, small acts of kindness often matter far more than we realize.

**One encouraging word, offered with sincerity, can become an instrument of God’s grace.**

**1\. We Underestimate the Power of Encouragement**

Words seem small.

A compliment.

A thank you.

An honest expression of appreciation.

A reminder that someone is not alone.

Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that words carry tremendous power.

They can:

- wound
- heal
- discourage
- strengthen
- divide
- restore

Encouragement is one of the simplest ways we participate in God’s work of building others up.

**2\. Encouragement Begins With Attention**

Before you can encourage someone, you have to notice them.

Really notice them.

Their:

- weariness
- faithfulness
- quiet acts of service
- courage
- gifts
- struggles

Encouragement is rarely accidental.

It grows from paying close attention to another person’s life.

**3\. Blessing Is More Than Complimenting**

Blessing someone is not flattery.

It is speaking truth that strengthens another person.

Sometimes blessing sounds like:

*I see the way you’ve remained faithful.*

*Thank you for how you cared for others.*

*I believe God is still at work in you.*

Truthful encouragement nourishes the soul because it reminds people of what God is already doing.

**4\. Presence Can Be a Blessing**

Not every encouragement requires many words.

Sometimes the greatest gift is simply remaining present.

Listening.

Praying.

Sitting quietly beside someone who is hurting.

God often ministers through people who are willing to stay when others hurry away.

**5\. Encouragement Changes the Encourager**

One of the surprises of this discipline is that it transforms us too.

When we intentionally look for God’s work in another person’s life, our own hearts begin changing.

Comparison loosens.

Gratitude grows.

Compassion deepens.

The habit of blessing others slowly reshapes the one offering the blessing.

**6\. Ordinary People Become Instruments of Grace**

Many people imagine God working only through extraordinary moments.

But often He works through ordinary people who:

- notice
- affirm
- encourage
- pray
- remain faithful

Simple acts of encouragement can become moments where someone experiences God’s kindness through another human being.

**7\. A Practice for July 8**

Today, intentionally strengthen one person.

Not casually.

Intentionally.

Offer:

- sincere encouragement
- thoughtful affirmation
- grateful recognition
- prayer
- attentive presence

Then ask yourself:

**What has God placed within this person that deserves to be noticed today?**

Speak that truth with kindness.

**The Invitation**

July 8 reminds us that encouragement is not a personality trait.

It is a spiritual discipline.

Every day, God places people in our path who need:

- hope
- courage
- reassurance
- compassion

You may never know how deeply your words or presence affect another person’s life.

But God does.

So become someone who notices.

Someone who blesses.

Someone whose presence quietly strengthens the hearts of others.

Because love often sounds like encouragement.
