*Why Simplicity Is a Spiritual Discipline*

*March 16 — Lent | The Discipleship of Your Dollar*

There is a quiet assumption woven through modern life:

More will make things easier.

More space.

More income.

More convenience.

More options.

And sometimes it does.

But just as often, more complicates life.

More to manage.

More to maintain.

More to insure.

More to worry about losing.

**Simplicity is not deprivation.**

**It is the freedom that comes from needing less.**

Lent gently invites us to explore that freedom.

**1\. Possessions Multiply Responsibilities**

Every possession carries invisible weight.

Not just the cost to acquire it.

But the cost to:

- store it
- maintain it
- repair it
- upgrade it
- replace it

Over time, possessions quietly demand attention.

The result is not always abundance.

Sometimes it is fatigue.

**2\. Simplicity Restores Attention**

When life becomes crowded with possessions and obligations, attention fragments.

You move from task to task.

Responsibility to responsibility.

Purchase to purchase.

Simplicity does not eliminate responsibility.

But it clears enough space for attention to return.

And attention is where discipleship grows.

**3\. Jesus Modeled Simplicity**

Jesus owned very little.

He traveled lightly.

Depended on hospitality.

Carried few possessions.

This was not because material things are evil.

It was because freedom requires margin.

When fewer things compete for attention, the heart becomes easier to direct toward God and neighbor.

**4\. Simplicity Clarifies Generosity**

Simplicity is closely connected to generosity.

When lifestyle expectations rise endlessly, generosity shrinks.

When “enough” becomes clear, giving becomes possible.

The less tightly we organize life around consumption, the more room generosity has to grow.

**5\. A Practice for March 16**

Today, notice one possession that quietly demands more attention than it gives value.

Ask yourself:

**“Would my life be lighter without this?”**

You don’t need to act immediately.

But awareness is the first step toward freedom.

**The Invitation**

Lent reminds us that life does not become fuller through accumulation alone.

Sometimes it becomes fuller through release.

Simplicity is not about rejecting good things.

It is about choosing freedom over clutter.

And freedom creates space for what matters most.

Monday through Saturday.

Even in what we choose not to keep.
