The Goal Is Transformation, Not Information
Let’s be honest: modern Christianity is obsessed with information.
We love:
- sermons
- podcasts
- books
- commentaries
- conferences
- Bible trivia nights
None of these things are bad — but they can create an illusion that knowledge equals maturity.
Dallas Willard nails it:
“We have counted on preaching and teaching to form faith, but it hasn’t done so.”
Jesus didn’t say,
“By this everyone will know you are my disciples…
if you know a lot about me.”
He said:
“…if you love one another.” (John 13:35)
Transformation > Information
N.T. Wright often reminds us that Christianity is not merely about believing a new set of ideas — it’s about becoming a new kind of human.
Information alone can’t do that.
Transformation comes from:
- practicing what we learn
- submitting our habits to Jesus
- letting Scripture shape our inner life
- choosing forgiveness, grace, and humility in real moments
Put simply:
The goal of discipleship is not to know more about Jesus but to look more like Him.
Think of it this way
You can read every cookbook in the world…
but unless you get into the kitchen, you’ll never learn to cook.
You can study exercise physiology…
but unless you move your body, nothing changes.
You can listen to sermons for forty years…
but unless you practice forgiveness, prayer, generosity, and compassion…
your heart stays the same.
Transformation Takes Time & Practice
Jesus isn’t interested in instant results.
He’s interested in surrendered lives.
Transformation is slow.
But slow is not the same as stuck.
Every time you:
- choose grace when anger is easier
- open your Bible when Netflix is calling
- pray a messy, honest prayer instead of staying silent
- apologize instead of defending yourself
…you are learning the Jesus way.
Here’s the good news
You do not transform yourself.
You simply cooperate with the One who does the transforming.
You make space.
Jesus does the work.
