# What Is a Disciple? Spoiler: Not a “Super-Christian”

Most people hear the word *disciple* and immediately picture someone holier, wiser, or more spiritual than they’ll ever be.

Someone who wakes up at 4 a.m. humming hymns.

Someone who never sins, never doubts, and has the whole Bible memorized in Greek and Hebrew.

In other words… someone *else.*

But here’s the truth no one told many of us growing up:

**A disciple isn’t a spiritual superhero. A disciple is an apprentice.**

### Apprentice = Someone who learns by staying close.

When Jesus invited people to follow Him, He didn’t say:

> “Come master advanced theology with Me.”

> Or

> “Come prove your worth to Me.”

He said:

> **“Come follow Me.”**

In first-century Judaism, disciples followed a *rabbi* so closely that they became like him — not just in what they knew, but in how they lived.

To be someone’s disciple meant:

- You watched how your rabbi interacted with people.
- You practiced the prayers he prayed.
- You shared meals with him.
- You listened, stumbled, asked questions… and tried again.

It was hands-on, life-on-life learning.

### If you can learn to bake, change a tire, or use a new app… you can be Jesus’ disciple.

Discipleship isn’t:

- A reward for spiritual elites
- A program reserved for church leaders
- A badge earned after years of service

Discipleship is the simple, humble decision to say:

**“Jesus, teach me how to live.”**

### Debunking the Myths

**Myth #1: Disciples never fail.**

The original twelve disproved this daily. Peter denied Jesus *three times in one night* — and Jesus still called him “rock.”

**Myth #2: Disciples must understand everything.**

Over and over, the gospels say, *“They did not understand.”*

Discipleship isn’t about immediate mastery — it’s about proximity.

**Myth #3: Discipleship is extra-credit Christianity.**

There’s no category in the New Testament for “Christian” who isn’t also a disciple.

Being saved and being shaped were always meant to go together.

### The Invitation

You don’t graduate into discipleship — you simply begin.

And the starting point is not, “Be perfect.”

It’s: **“Follow Me.”**

If you can take a step, you can be a disciple.
