What You’re Carrying

A hand opening from a clenched fist to an open palm in soft light, symbolizing release and letting go.
This image represents the movement from control to surrender. The opening hand symbolizes the slow, honest process of releasing fear and trust in financial discipleship during Lent.

Letting Go Before You Move Forward

March 27 — Lent | The Discipleship of Your Dollar

By the end of this month, something has likely surfaced.

Not just ideas about money.

Not just habits.

But weight.

The weight of:

  • financial pressure
  • comparison
  • responsibility
  • expectation
  • quiet anxiety about the future

You may not have named it that way.

But you feel it.

Before we move toward the cross, Lent invites us to notice what we’re carrying.

1. We Carry More Than We Realize

Much of what we carry is invisible.

Not just dollars and decisions.

But:

  • the need to feel secure
  • the pressure to provide
  • the fear of not having enough
  • the quiet comparison we never quite silence
  • the belief that everything depends on us

These don’t show up on a budget.

But they shape every financial decision.

2. Money Is Often Where We Hold Tightest

We release many things more easily than we release control over money.

Because money feels like:

  • safety
  • stability
  • predictability
  • control

And when life feels uncertain, we grip tighter.

Not because we are greedy.

Because we are human.

3. Lent Invites Us to Notice the Grip

Before Lent asks us to release anything, it asks us to see clearly.

Where are your hands tight?

Where are you holding:

  • fear
  • control
  • expectation
  • pressure

This is not about judgment.

It’s about awareness.

Because you cannot release what you refuse to name.

4. Letting Go Begins With Honesty

Letting go is not a dramatic act.

It begins quietly.

By acknowledging:

“This matters more to me than I realized.”

“I’m more anxious here than I want to admit.”

“I’m holding this tighter than I should.”

That honesty is not weakness.

It is the beginning of freedom.

5. You Don’t Release Everything at Once

We often think surrender must be total and immediate.

But most surrender happens gradually.

One area at a time.

One decision at a time.

One moment of trust at a time.

You don’t have to open your hands completely today.

You only have to loosen your grip.

6. A Practice for March 27

Today, take a quiet moment.

Name one thing you are carrying financially:

  • a fear
  • a pressure
  • a burden
  • a sense of control

Then pray:

“God, help me loosen my grip here.”

Not perfectly.

Just honestly.

The Invitation

March has been about the discipleship of your dollar.

But beneath that, it has always been about your heart.

Before Palm Sunday arrives…

before we remember a King who let go of everything…

pause.

Notice what you’re holding.

And begin to release it.

Because what you carry into the next season matters.

Monday through Saturday.

Even in what you’re learning to let go.
