*Presence When Life Interrupts Your Plans*

*January 26 — The Discipline of Presence*

There are moments when presence is chosen —

and moments when it is imposed.

A storm rolls in.

Plans are canceled.

Power flickers.

The schedule dissolves.

You are no longer in charge of how the day unfolds.

And suddenly, the illusion of control is gone.

**Presence becomes unavoidable when control is removed.**

**1\. Control Is Comfortable — Until It Isn’t**

Most days, we move through life assuming a certain level of control.

We plan.

We schedule.

We anticipate.

We expect systems to work and routines to hold.

But discipleship quietly reminds us: control has always been provisional.

Jesus never promised His followers a predictable life.

He promised His presence.

When control slips away, we are invited to notice what we usually avoid:

our dependence.

**2\. Loss of Control Reveals What We Trust**

Moments of disruption often reveal what we lean on most.

When things stop working, we notice:

- how anxious we become
- how quickly we try to regain command
- how uncomfortable stillness feels
- how fragile our sense of security can be

Presence invites a different response:

**to remain attentive rather than reactive.**

This is not resignation.

It is trust practiced under pressure.

**3\. Jesus Was Present Without Control**

Jesus lived in a world He did not control.

He did not command the political system.

He did not manage outcomes.

He did not prevent suffering.

And yet He remained deeply present —

to the Father,

to the moment,

to the people in front of Him.

Presence is not powerlessness.

It is faithfulness without illusion.

**4\. What to Do When You Can’t Do Much**

When circumstances limit your options, discipleship becomes simple — and honest.

You can:

- breathe
- notice
- listen
- pray
- stay attentive to those near you
- release what you cannot fix

Presence does not require productivity.

It requires availability.

**A Practice for January 26**

If plans fall apart today, try this prayer:

**“God, help me be faithful in what remains.”**

Not everything must be salvaged.

Some things are simply received.

**The Invitation**

January 26 reminds us that presence is not about managing life well.

It is about trusting God when management is no longer possible.

When control is taken away, presence remains.

And God meets us there.

This month at *Disciple to Faith*, we’re exploring what it looks like to follow Jesus Monday through Saturday — practicing presence not as theory, but as discipleship in everyday life.

And sometimes, the most faithful step forward…

is choosing not to rush ahead.

Stay present.

God is already at work.
