The Surprising Fruit of Financial Faithfulness

March 21 — Lent | The Discipleship of Your Dollar

Yesterday, we named something honest:

Faithfulness can cost you.

You feel it:

  • in what you don’t buy
  • in what you give away
  • in the space where something used to be

And if we’re honest, that cost can feel heavy.

But something unexpected happens over time.

What begins as cost often becomes joy.

Not immediately.

Not automatically.

But gradually.

1. Joy Rarely Arrives First

When you choose financial faithfulness, the first feeling is rarely joy.

It’s restraint.

It’s tension.

It’s the awareness of what you could have had.

But discipleship is not built on immediate reward.

It is built on alignment.

Joy doesn’t lead obedience.

It often follows it.

2. The Heart Adjusts Over Time

At first, generosity feels like release.

Then, slowly, it becomes:

  • relief
  • lightness
  • freedom

You begin to notice:

  • less anxiety about money
  • less comparison with others
  • less attachment to outcomes

The thing you thought you were losing begins to lose its hold on you.

And that is where joy starts to grow.

3. Joy Comes From Freedom, Not Possession

Our culture teaches:

Joy comes from having more.

The kingdom teaches:

Joy comes from needing less.

When money no longer controls your imagination:

  • you stop measuring yourself constantly
  • you stop chasing every upgrade
  • you stop fearing every loss

Freedom creates space for joy.

Not the excitement of acquisition —

but the steadiness of enough.

4. Lent Prepares Us for This Shift

Lent is not meant to leave us in deprivation.

It leads us through it.

We fast.

We release.

We simplify.

And in that process, something surprising happens:

What once felt essential becomes optional.

What once felt costly becomes freeing.

What once felt like loss becomes gain.

5. Joy Looks Different Than You Expect

This joy is not loud.

It’s not flashy.

It doesn’t announce itself.

It feels like:

  • peace in your decisions
  • clarity about your priorities
  • steadiness in your finances
  • gratitude without comparison

It’s quiet.

But it lasts.

6. A Practice for March 21

Today, reflect on a recent financial decision that felt costly.

Ask:

“What feels different now than it did at first?”

Look for:

  • lightness
  • relief
  • peace
  • clarity

Even small shifts matter.

That’s where joy begins.

The Invitation

March reminds us that money shapes the heart.

And when the heart is reshaped, joy follows.

Not because you have more.

But because you are freer.

Freer from comparison.

Freer from anxiety.

Freer from needing money to carry what it was never meant to carry.

The cost was real.

But so is the joy.

Monday through Saturday.

Even in what you’ve released.
