When It Starts to Feel Heavy

Carrying Without Being Overwhelmed
April 29 —Discipleship in Real Life

Yesterday we talked about becoming someone others can lean on.

Steady.
Present.
Grounded.

And over time, that becomes real.

But then something else can happen.

Quietly.

What once felt like strength
can begin to feel like weight.

1. Being Available Can Become Overextended

When people begin to trust you, they naturally turn toward you.

They:

  • ask more
  • share more
  • lean more
  • expect more

And without noticing, you begin to carry more.

Not just your life.

But pieces of others’.

2. The Line Is Easy to Miss

There is a subtle difference between:

  • being present
  • and taking on

Between:

  • holding space
  • and holding responsibility

At first, it feels the same.

But over time, the difference becomes clear:

One sustains.

The other drains.

3. You Were Never Meant to Carry Everything

Even Jesus did not carry everything.

He:

  • withdrew
  • rested
  • stepped away
  • remained grounded

He was present.

But not overextended.

Faithfulness does not require you to absorb every burden around you.

4. Steadiness Requires Boundaries

The strength others feel in you
comes from your connection to what sustains you.

When that connection weakens,
everything begins to feel heavier.

So the question is not:

“How much can I carry?”

It’s:

“What keeps me grounded enough to remain steady?”

5. You Help Others Best by Staying Centered

When you try to carry everything:

  • your presence shifts
  • your patience shortens
  • your clarity fades

But when you stay centered:

  • you remain calm
  • you listen clearly
  • you offer presence without pressure

You don’t need to take on more
to be helpful.

You need to remain grounded.

6. A Practice for April 29

Today, notice one moment where something feels heavy.

Pause.

Not to fix it.

To acknowledge it.

Then ask:

“Is this mine to carry?”

If it is — hold it.

If it isn’t — release it.

The Invitation

April 29 reminds us that discipleship is not about carrying more.

It is about carrying rightly.

You can be:

  • present
  • steady
  • available

without being overwhelmed.

Not because you are stronger.

Because you are aligned.

Stay grounded.
Stay connected.
Stay steady.

Monday through Saturday.

Even when it starts to feel heavy.
