*(Staying When You Want to Move)*
*May 5 — Discipleship in Real Life*

You try to be still.

Even for a moment.

And almost immediately, something inside you resists.

Your mind moves.
Your body shifts.
Your attention reaches for something else.

Not because you decided to stop.

Because something in you doesn’t want to stay.

**Restlessness is not a failure of stillness. It is what stillness reveals.**

**1\. Restlessness Is Immediate**

It doesn’t take long.

The moment you slow down, you notice:

- the urge to check something
- the need to move
- the impulse to fill the space
- the discomfort of doing nothing

It’s subtle.

But persistent.

**2\. We’re Conditioned to Avoid It**

We’ve learned to respond to restlessness quickly.

We:

- reach for our phone
- shift to another task
- create movement
- distract ourselves

Not because we need to.

Because we don’t want to sit with what’s there.

**3\. Restlessness Points to Something Deeper**

Restlessness isn’t random.

It often carries:

- unfinished thoughts
- unacknowledged emotions
- underlying tension
- a need for control
- a discomfort with silence

When you stop avoiding it, you begin to see it.

And when you see it, you can begin to understand it.

**4\. You Don’t Need to Eliminate It**

The goal is not to remove restlessness.

It’s to remain with it.

To:

- notice it
- allow it
- stay present through it

Without immediately reacting.

This is where the inner life deepens.

**5\. Staying Is the Work**

Stillness is not about achieving calm.

It’s about choosing not to leave.

Even when:

- your mind moves
- your body resists
- your attention drifts

You stay.

And every time you stay, something shifts.

**6\. A Practice for May 5**

Today, when you feel restless, pause.

Instead of moving away, ask:

**“What is this trying to show me?”**

Not to solve it.

Just to notice it.

Then remain for one more moment than you normally would.

That’s enough.

**The Invitation**

May 5 reminds us that restlessness is not the problem.

Avoidance is.

You don’t need to become perfectly still.

You need to become willing to stay.

Because what you’re tempted to escape
is often where something important is waiting.

Monday through Saturday.

Even in the moments you want to move.
